Eye care: choosing the best treatment

Eyes require regular care. Working long hours on computer, not wearing sunglasses when weather is sunny, when you blink not often can be dangerous for health. Any symptoms like redness, itchiness etc. should be a reason to see a doctor. However to reduce discomfort you can choose one of eye lubricating medications that can be bought online or at a drugstore like Walgreens or Similasan, just ask a pharmacist.

There are two big categories of eye treatments in optometry. The first is over-the-counter and the second is prescription remedies like Xiidra, Optive, Restasis, Alaway, antihistamines. Some of them don't contain preservative. Over-the-counter eye drops and ointments are not expensive and are useful in most cases. It's better to buy the ones without preservative. However, if the symptoms get worse, it's better to see your doctor. Don't wait for eye disease to progress!

Dry eyes: types of drops

Problem of dry eyes

Some situations may cause problems with eyes, such as computer eye strain or short-term dry eyes. Redness can be caused by being outdoors when weather is very windy or sunny. In these cases you can use lubricating eye drops like Xiidra or Optive, also known as artificial tears. The principle of work for these eyedrops is simple. They add tear elements to supplement natural tears and make eyes more moisturized. As a result, you feel comfortable and healthy. It's recommended to avoid using decongestant eyedrops for dry eye. They are necessary for treating redness. They reduce this symptom, but they could worsen dry eye symptoms.

In case of severe dry eye problem it's better to buy a lubricating ointments or gels without preservative. This kind of medications usually cause blurry vision. That's why most people use these remedies before going to bed.

In case eyedrops like Optive and lubricating gels and ointments don't help, go to your doctor for prescription medications or additional treatment like punctal plugs.

Sodium Hyaluronate and Glycerin remedy are used to treat the syndrome too. According to studies sodium hyaluronate and glycerin based cures are effective for dryness syndrome. The dose of remedy based on sodium hyaluronate or glycerin should be calculated by a specialist.

Restasis

OTC artificial tears can be paired with drops called Restasis. Not only it lubricates the organ, but also helps your body to produce natural tears. Restasis therapeutic effect takes time to be visible. Tear production will be easier and make you feel better. Restasis should be taken not less than 90 days for full benefit. It's common that people who use Restasis feel burning during the first several weeks.

Xiidra

Xiidra is used to treat dry eye problem. Like Restasis, Xiidra is necessary to reduce soreness and other symptoms of this condition. Xiidra was examined for being safe for health. Almost 1200 people who participated in the test said that lubricating Xiidra drops reduced symptoms of the sickness. Like Restasis, Xiidra should be used twice a day.

Lacrisert

Lacrisert is a lubricant made by Bausch + Lomb. It doesn't contain preservative and provides long effect. Most patients apply Lacrisert from Bausch + Lomb once a day. According to company lubricant helps with clouding or blurry sight. Lacrisert can be used in cases when artificial tear therapy doesn't solve problem with dry eyes.

Make sure that you apply Bausch + Lomb medication correctly. Lacrisert by Bausch + Lomb can cause cornea abrasion and clouding eyesight if used wrong. Lacrisert can be bought at a drugstore. To find the remedy just search for its name – Lacrisert.

Punctal plugs

Dry feeling can also be treated with punctal or lacrimal plugs. These are small devices that specialists insert into punctal openings of tear drainage ducts. When punctal plugs are placed, they don't allow tear to flow away from the organ. Punctal device relieves the symptoms of dry feeling. Lacrimal plugs can be removed when there is enough tear in the organ.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL has been used to treat rosacea of the epidermis for over a decade. Ocular rosacea may contribute to dry eye syndrome. IPL procedure is based on flashes of light that go onto skin. After this effect patients notice relief from dry feeling and become less dependent on artificial tear remedy with or without preservative. IPL can be recommended for patients who would like to avoid regular eye drops use. Usually 4-6 procedures are needed for full course. IPL is generally well-tolerated.

Eye Redness

Whitening eyedrops without preservative include vasoconstrictors that reduce redness in eyes. They shrink blood vessels on the sclera and make them not so visible. This kind of remedies are useful if you want to get rid of redness. However, it may be a symptom of a serious disease like glaucoma, conjunctivitis, infection, allergies or blepharitis. Better consult your doctor first to know the medical cause of the health problem.

Side effects of decongestant eyedrops like Naphazoline may include itchy eyes, dryness etc. This kind of medications shouldn't be used very often. Your eyes will develop tolerance to the treatment effect and the redness will come back. In cases when eyes are tired of computer, generally irritated and itchy, you can use OTC lubricating eyedrops. They offer safer treatment. Sometimes eyes can be red and itchy because of allergy. Lubricating eye drops can wash something you're allergic to out of your eyes, for example pollen and release histamines. Consider respected brands like Bausch + Lomb.

Allergies treatments

To cure an allergy you will need special medications – antihistamine eyedrops. This kind of treatment is formulated to prevent eyes from being itchy. Allergy remedies reduce histamines in the eye tissues. Antihistamine eyedrops are also useful when you experience symptoms like redness, swollen eyes, puffiness, wateriness etc. They release histamines and make you feel better.

Decongestant remedy like Naphazoline may contain antihistamines. You may use them for allergies treatment but they shouldn't be applied for a long period of time. However, if allergy symptoms don't disappear call your doctor for a consultation.

Swelling, Soreness and Discharge – best treatments

Eye can be sore when it's tired, overused or dry. In case when eye is sore a lot the vision should be checked for presbyopia, nearsightedness, astigmatism or farsightedness. To relieve irritation from vision causes like discharge or crying try applying lubricating eye drop. If eye discharge is yellowish and thick, don't hesitate to visit doctors. This symptom might be an indication of an eye infection. Your doctor will examine it and prescribe a special remedies like antibiotic eye drop.

Pinkeye drops and other infection treatments

Conjunctivitis can also be called a “Pinkeye”. It's a very common eye infection. Pinkeye can refer to several variants of conjunctivitis. Choice of eyedrops depends on the type of infection. So visit ophthalmic doctor like Jules Winokur, in order to determine the best remedies in individual case.

Viral conjunctivitis. This type is contagious. Sometimes viral pinkeye can disappear on their own, however severe kinds make eye watery, sore and cause redness. The vision can be blurred. Lubricating eye ointment, gels or drops may bring the relief because they work like an ice compress. But be attentive to your health. If your condition gets worse, go to an ophthalmic doctor very quickly.

Bacterial conjunctivitis. Its symptoms include redness, eye sore and thick discharge. This kind of disease should be treated with prescription remedies. So definitely see doctors first.

Allergic conjunctivitis. It can cause bloodshot eye, swollen eyelids, itchiness, inflammation. However, this type of pinkeye not contagious. In most cases OTC antihistamine and lubricating medical drops, ointment or gels is enough for relief. You can use histamines reducing ophthalmic drops like Claritin, Zyrtec, Benadril or a remedy from Bausch + Lomb. When symptoms appear to be very severe consult your doctor. You might need strong prescription drops or oral treatment. Be careful when you treat infections – bottle shouldn't touch an eye. It may lead to spreading of the disease. Cure with preservative can cause allergic reaction.

Giant papillary Pinkeye. It affect the inner eyelids. Contact lens wear can cause this kind of individual reaction.

Sometimes Pinkeye can be treated by antibiotic drops. They are necessary only in case of bacterial Pinkeye. Consult a specialist from a hospital like Saini or Winokur first. Saini Center can be contacted by email or phone.

Itchy problem

Itchiness can be caused by seasonal allergies. So you can treat it with over-the-counter antihistamines or decongestants like Naphazoline. The right choice should match with underlying causes. For example, Visine is only for cosmetic purposes. Visine LR is a decongestant. Visine Tears, GenTeal, Murine Tears and Bion Tears are OTC artificial tears. Alaway, Visine All Day, Optive, Zaditor contain antihistamine elements so they can be used to treat an allergy.

Blepharitis

Blepharitis has symptom of irritated eyelids. It can be caused by various reasons, including dry eye, acne rosacea or bacterial inflammation. Irritation is seen on the skin at the eyelashes line. Illness makes eyelids thick, dry, itchy. In order to treat this condition doctors from hospitals like Saini or Winokur recommend to use steroid drops or artificial tears.

Meibomian Blepharitis can be caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. These glands are named after a German physician and are located at the top and bottom eyelids. Meibomian glands produce meibum, that consists of lipid elements. Meibomian glands lipid secretions are necessary for lubricating the eyelids and protection from tear.

MGD can be treated with warm compresses that open clogged lipid meibomian duct. Hard pieces of lipid meibum that block the flow should be gently melted. Meibomian duct can also become free of pressure with the use of forceps-type devices. Results are usually positive. Pressure to eyelids can be uncomfortable, but it's necessary to make meibomian lipid ducts function normally.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma can damage nerves that transmit visual information into the brain. To treat glaucoma specialists recommend Prostaglandins, beta-blockers, carbonic inhibitors. List may include drops like: Alphagan, Timoptic XE, Betoptic S etc. Glaucoma can destroy your vision so definitely go to see a specialist.

Chalazion

The meibomian lipid cyst develops gradually. It is a cyst that can be located in the eyelids. It appears because of the blocked oil gland. The meibum cyst is red but non-painful. The blocked gland is the meibomian gland, but it can also be a gland of Zeis. Symptoms of meibomian gland block include increased tears and swelling. In order to treat Meibomian cysts patients receive drops that prevent inflammation. Meibomian glands lipid blocks can be treat with a surgery but special device called Lipiflow is quite useful too.

The Lipiflow is a system that can be used for treating of Meibomian gland lipid dysfunction. Lipiflow applies sufficient heat to melt deposits in the meibomian lipid gland. The Lipiflow device can be attached to the organ for a short session. Studies tell us that Lipiflow can reduce symptoms of lipid meibum blocks. After usage of the device meibomian gland lipid problem is solved.

The effect of Lipiflow lasts for 1-3 years. As the procedure isn't covered by insurance you have to go to a specialist. Using Lipiflow may cost $700-900 at Saini or Winokur hospital. There are almost no side-effects from Lipiflow. Lipiflow can be applied in order to treat chalazion, cornea abrasion or MGD.

Glands of Zeis are located on the margin of eyelid. These are sebaceous lipid glands. Each gland produces lipid oily substance for the eyelashes. The lipid secretions are necessary for hair follicles. Near the base of eyelashes there are apocrine glands that are called glands of Moll. Dysfunction of the lipid glands of Zeis causes styes and abscesses. It's better to consult a specialist from hospital like Saini or Winokur.

Ophthalmic drops without preservative – yes or no?

Many medical drops contain a preservative. It is needed for preventing growth of bacteria and making treatment safe. The only problem with it is that some patients are allergic to preservative. So make sure that ophthalmic drops that you've chosen don't contain elements that will cause irritation or redness in your individual case. Doctors recommend to avoid drops that have preservative. This kind of ointment or medical drops can be a good solution for individual cases. However the period of use for drops without preservative is limited because of bacteria growth. To use it apply it in and don't blink – let it work. If you blink too soon the remedy without preservative won't have enough time for effect. These cures don't contain any preservative: NanoTears, Systane Ultra, TheraTears etc.

Eye drops in case of contact lens

Eye can feel discomfort because of contact lens. They can cause redness, tears, itchiness or even inflammation. There's a special type for this case – rewetters. They will re-moisten contact lens wear – they work just like blink. In case of over-the-counter drops it's important to make sure that they are compatible with your contact lens wear. Rewetters can be applied when you wear lenses. Any other drops require to take off the lenses so you could blink and drops would go out. Even if you don't experience dry eye problem it's better to have rewetters just in case. You can buy them in drugstores like Similasan or Walgreens.

It's necessary to keep contact lenses and vials clean. Fill lenses or vials with solution. Then apply enzymatic tablets. Drop one in lenses or vials. Leave them for 10-15 minutes.

Tips for keeping eyes healthy

First, take breaks from computer. Focusing on different objects will help you to avoid strain. Second, blink frequently. When we use gadgets we blink less than we should. This action helps us to wash the sclera. Try to blink fully. Also you can blink when irritant got into your eye or use remedy like Xiidra. Third, wear quality sunglasses. Choose the ones that block UV 100%. Good suglasses will protect you from wind, sun, dust. If you use contact lenses, keep them and vials clean. Try to use remedy without preservative.

When seeing doctors is necessary

Not every symptom may cause vision to get worse. If eye condition is a problem in life of an individual it's better to see doctors, not pharmacist from Similasan. Optometry specialist will check ocular pressure or give an advice on vials or sunglasses.

Developing clouding vision problems is common during the seasonal allergies. Mild reaction is called seasonal pinkeye, more severe type is known as perennial allergy pinkeye. Nevertheless, inflammation and dry feeling should be enough for you to start treating the condition. Illnesses like Cornea abrasion, Lacrimal flow blocks, high or low ocular pressure, Glaucoma can be very dangerous. Better choose drops without preservative so there will be no additional allergy reaction.

Artificial tears without preservative or vials can be bought in any drugstore like Walgreens or Similasan. But they are suitable not for every condition, so consult a pharmacist first. As for Restasis, Xiidra, Lacrisert from Bausch + Lomb, antihistamines, Alaway – these should be prescribed by an optometry specialist first. Devices like Lipiflow, Punctal plugs, IPL can not be applied without a practitioner. Make sure that you wear sunglasses for UV protection, blink often, don't work on computer for a long time. Check out online or regular drugstores like Similasan or Walgreens for special offers on the remedy you need like Xiidra. Consult a pharmacist if you feel any doubt.
